One of Robert Rosolanko’s most rewarding positions was serving as the Outpatient Clinical Director for Syracuse Behavioral Healthcare. This role left him responsible for all outpatient clinical substance use disorder and mental health programs, including Opioid Treatment Program, Children and Adolescent Clinic, Targeted Case Management, Regional Open Access and overall Integrated Outpatient services. Additional responsibilities included recruiting and selection of staff for employment, assuring continuing process improvement and staff development, and continuous staff performance evaluation and supervision.

Robert Rosolanko greatly enjoyed holding a management position where he could mentor staff and help them progress in their careers. This experience showed him how many professionals seek opportunities in healthcare because they want to make a real difference in the lives of struggling people. Those involved with the opioid treatment program and the children and adolescent clinic are tasked with tough jobs. It takes great patience and a willingness to approach every day with complete focus to help make a difference in patients’ lives.

The opioid pandemic in America is horrendous. Robert Rosolanko is proud to have worked with organizations doing their part to help patients struggling with opioid addiction. Many people who suffer from opioid addiction were prescribed painkillers by a medical doctor only to develop an addiction. Opioid drugs are the number one cause of overdose deaths in the United States. It is vital that anyone even prescribed these drugs is taking them as directed by a Doctor and asking another person to make sure they only take the amount prescribed when they are supposed to take them. There’s really no way to predict who is going to develop a dependence on opioids, so Robert Rosolanko always suggests avoiding them at all costs.

As Robert Rosolanko will discuss in greater detail in future blog posts, addiction is a condition that creates an overwhelming sensation inside of a person that they can’t live without something. Those who battle drug addiction are dealing with an irresistible craving that continues even though a person may be aware of the potential harmful consequences of drug use. Opioids are amongst the most addictive drugs because they activate a powerful reward center in the brain. When a person’s brain chemistry is altered by opioids, they may receive a euphoric feeling for a brief time, which causes the brain to demand a return to that feeling. Those who give into the initial temptation are on their way towards a substantial struggle with opioid addiction.

Like many drugs, the more a person takes an opioid, the more they will develop a tolerance. In order to achieve the same euphoric feeling a person had the first time they took the drug, they will need to gradually increase the amount of drugs they are taking. This is where life-threatening scenarios can and do occur.

Robert Rosolanko knows from witnessing it in real life that anyone has the power to overcome an addiction, but it is far from an easy task. It takes an incredible amount of will from the addict and often an incredible support system to push the person toward the professional help they need. Those who can afford recovery centers should consider them as an addict will likely need medical supervision as they ween themselves off of a drug as potent as opioids.

Robert Rosolanko is so thankful for the opportunity to discuss opioid addiction on his website. Future blog posts will dive deep into the world of addiction, how people can join the fight against addiction, and what family members can do when they see warning signs of addictive behavior in a family member.
